Born in Brisbane in 1901, Brown studied at Slade School and at Ruskin School of Drawing, Oxford. He worked with war-time concert parties prior to visiting to Australia where he held several exhibitions before returning to London in 1948. He came back to Australia with his family in 1978 and found a large number of his early paintings in the family house. These were exhibited in Brisbane in 1979 and at a major retrospective exhibition in Sydney in 1980 and in Melbourne in 1981. A book on the artist's life and work was published in 1980. A further retrospective was held at the Queensland Art Gallery in 1990.
