Colin Garland was born on April 12, 1935 in Sydney. His talent for drawing was encouraged by his mother who allowed him to enter art competitions and use his prize money to purchase more art supplies. He decided to study fine art at the National School of Art in Sydney and he worked part time as a performer, then later designed and made costumes and sets for various theatrical groups. He travelled to Jamaica in 1962 and later secured a job at the Jamaica School of Art, where he lived for the rest of his life, continuing to work in the theatre industry where he was noted for his contribution to the set design for the National Dance Theatre Company. Colin Garland produced paintings as well as sculptural works that referenced the imagery and the socio-historical realities specific to his new environment and interactions.
