Born in Brisbane in 1924, Shirley Bourne studied at the National Gallery School, Melbourne. She worked as an assistant in Sir William Dargie's studio for a number of years. In 1952, after winning the Dora Wilson Travelling Scholarship, she studied and travelled for three years in Europe. She regulalary entred the Archibald Prize competition and held solo exhibitions in Melbourne, Canberra and Adelaide. She was a member of the Victorian Artists' Society, Twenty Melbourne Painters and the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors.
