Born in Sydney in 1922, Bette Hays studied at the East Sydney Technical College under Frank Norton, Douglas Dundas, Jean Bellette, Alfred Cook and Roland Wakelin. She lived in Papua New Guinea for a number of years and later taught at Townsville Grammar School from 1964 to 1971. In 1965 she was awarded the Townsville Art Prize. She first exhibited in Melbourne in 1971, and since then has exhibited in Adelaide, Sydney, Brisbane and London.
