John Beeman was born in Sydney in 1926. After completing service in World War II, he enrolled at the Julian Ashton's art school in Sydney in 1945 then commenced working at the Australian Museum in 1949. He received a grant in 1950 to attend London University to study painting and drawing at the Slade School of Fine Art, and art restoration and art material chemistry at the Courtauld Institute. London and in Europe. He returned to Australia in 1952 and continued employment with the museum until 1969, when he took up a position with the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service. During his working life, he painted whenever time permitted, and in 1979 retired to become a full time artist. A traditional figurative painter, he uses oil paint on traditional gesso panels. He has won a number of awards in New South Wales for his work.
