Mike Petre was born in Piopio, 220km north of Auckland in 1964. He was awarded a Bachelor of Agriculture (Management) from Massey University, in 1986 and later after further study, a Bachelor of Design from Carrington Polytechnic in 1994. Following his graduation he was a founder of the design studios, Sturdee Studios and Indicator Studios in 1998. He began exhibiting from the studios in 1995 and since 1997 has exhibited in dealer galleries in Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin. He has been a finalist in the three annual Wallace Art Awards in 1998, 1999 and 2001, administered by the Wallace Arts Trust.
