Born in the United States of America in 1846, Hopkins worked as a cartoonist in New York after fighting in the American Civil War. He arrived in Australia in 1883, where he soon became famous as 'Hop' of the 'Bulletin'. He was an etcher and watercolourist and started an artists' camp at Balmoral with Julian Ashton.
