About Tom Spence
Thomas Spence was born in Queensland in 1952. He studied at Catholic boarding schools where he enjoyed drawing, but only as an adult did he decide to take the leap into art school, having worked with Yvonne Koolmatrie and completing a series of works based on many different themes including: inner city/suburban landscapes, flashbacks to life in outback Muttaburra and clown portraits; religious and farming landscapes; war scenes and captured moments inside iconic Kings Cross night clubs. He has also painted abstract works. He won the Dobell Prize for drawing in 1994, the Blake Prize for Religious Art in 1997 and the JADA award in 2006.
