James Powditch was born in 1966 in Paddington, Sydney the son of artist Peter Powditch. In 1987 he commenced studies in Visual Arts at the City Art Institute, now the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales and then worked at a commercial gallery in Sydney. He won the 2007 Mosman Art Prize and was a co-winner of the 2005 Blake Prize for Religious Art and is a six-time finalist in the Art Gallery of New South Wales Archibald Prize.
