Born in Melbourne in 1945, Richard Havyatt studied architecture at Melbourne University, but had no formal art training. His paintings are of a modern semi-abstract style, and in 1967 he held the first of his eleven solo exhibitions between 1967 and 1990 in Melbourne. He was awarded the Georges Young Painter Award in 1966 and the Minnie Crouch Watercolour Prize (discontinued in 1977) in Ballarat in 1968 and 1969.
The total number of works by Richard Havyatt offered for sale by auction since 1976 is 26, of which 19 (73%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $1,760 for Tiered Sculpture sold by Leonard Joel in April 1993. This year one work has been offered for sale. Works by Richard Havyatt are held by the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria and a further three major public national galleries (see list below).
