Born in Ireland in 1869, Coffey studied at the Royal Art Society School, Sydney. In 1897 Julian Ashton resigned from this school to open his own. Coffey went with him. Coffey later taught at the University of Sydney and the East Sydney Technical College. In 1900 he was the official Australian representative at the International Art Congress at Dresden. For a time he also painted in the East Indies.
