Born in England in the 1830s, Edward Roper arrived in Australia in 1854. A painter, illustrator, publisher, lithographer and writer he was known to have travelled extensively, particularly around the goldfields area of Victoria, capturing the scenes in watercolour and ink. He exhibited in England with the Burlington Gallery in London.
