Born in Melbourne in 1873, Hall Thorpe was a staff artist for the 'Sydney Mail' for ten years where he learnt drawing and engraving. In the early 1900s he travelled to London. He studies at Hatherley's and St Martin's Achool of Art and earned a reputation for his floral prints which he exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists. Overseas, his work is represented in the collection of the British Museum.

Hall Thorpe is one of the most prolific of the artists listed in our database, with the number of works offered for sale by auction since 1977 of 815, of which 649 (80%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $8,100 for A Country Bunch, C. 1922 sold by Shapiro Auctioneers in November 2020. This year 24 works have been offered for sale.
