Born in Randwick, Sydney in 1892, John Eldershaw studied painting at the Julian Ashton School in Sydney, London and Paris. He lived and worked from Richmond in Tasmania for 20 years and then toured Australia by caravan from for two years from 1939. During World War II served as a camouflage artist. He is best known for his watercolours of representational landscapes. John Eldershaw was a foundation member of the Australian Watercolour Institute, an Honorary Life member since 1960, and was president from 1949 - 1952. He and held the record as the longest exhibiting member of the Australian Watercolour Institute, having participated in fifty of their annual exhibitions.
John Eldershaw is one of the most prolific of the artists listed in our database, with the number of works offered for sale by auction since 1969 of 461, of which 337 (73%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $11,000 for The Spit, Sydney Harbour sold by Christies in June 1989.
