Born in Scotland in 1812, from 1835 to 1850 he worked in Glasgow and London as an engraver. A portrait, landscape and topographical artist, he arrived in Dunedin in 1851 and painted views of Dunedin and surrounds, then moved to Sydney in the late 1850s. He exhibited in the Intercolonial Exhibition in Sydney in 1870 and the New South Wales Academy of Art exhibition in 1877. He was the brother of artist James Shaw (1815 - 1881).
