Born in Paperoa, New Zealand in 1954, mathematician and painter Peter James Smith 1976 obtained a Bachelor of Science (Hons) from the University of Auckland in 1976, and in 1980, a Masters degree in Science from Rutgers University, USA. After moving to Australia in 1980 he was awarded a PhD with a Master of Fine Art in painting from the University of Western Australia in 1984. After a number of academic positions he was appointed Professor of Mathematics and Art, School of Creative Media, RMIT University, Melbourne, a position he retained until 2010 when he retired to become a full time artist.. He commenced exhibiting in 1974 in New Zealand and from the 1990s showed several times a year in solo and group shows in New Zealand and Australia.
