Elizabeth Thomson was born in Auckland in 1955 and travelled extensively before enrolling at the University of Auckland Elam School of Fine Arts in 1982. She studied printmaking and sculpture. She was awarded the Elam Scholarship in 1985, and the Joe Raynes Scholarship and graduated with Master of Fine Arts with First Class Honours in 1988. She lives in Wellington where she works as a full-time artist, working as a sculptor in bronze, glass and wood and photographic prints. She has exhibited since 1994 throughout New Zealand and in Sydney. In 2006 a major 20 year retrospective of her work, Elizabeth Thomson: My Hi-Fi, My Sci- Fi was held at the City Art Gallery, Wellington and later toured five venues throughout New Zealand.
The total number of works by Elizabeth Thomson offered for sale by auction since 2002 is 87, of which 62 (71%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $22,305 for Lepidoptera sold by Dunbar Sloane in August 2018. This year one work has been offered for sale. Works by Elizabeth Thomson are held by the Museum Of New Zealand, National Gallery of Australia and a further two major public national galleries (see list below).
