Born in Auckland in 1944, John Parker studied at the Ilam School of Fine Arts, University of Canterbury in Christchurch.His first exhibition was in 1967 a year after graduating. He became a teacher at secondary level and in 1975 was named Frances Hodgkins Fellow at the University of Otago. He became known for large scale abstract landscapes in oil inspired by the Blenheim area where he lived. In 2002 Parker was appointed a New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to painting in the Queen's Birthday and Golden Jubilee Honours list.
The total number of works by John Parker offered for sale by auction since 1993 is 215, of which 146 (68%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $34,957 for Twenty Six Vessels sold by Art+Object in November 2021. This year one work has been offered for sale. Works by John Parker are held by the Museum Of New Zealand, Suter Art Gallery and Christchurch Art Gallery.
