Born in Halifax, England in 1962, Joanna Braithwaite arrived in New Zealand in 1965. In 1984 she was awarded a Bachelor of Fine Art from University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts, prior to moving to live in Sydney in 1999. In 2020 she was awarded a Master of Fine Art from the College of Fine Arts, Sydney in 2000. Her work is a surreal depiction of hybrid animals, humans and insects. She has exhibited in New Zealand since 1985, and in Australia since 1994.
