An ex-army officer, Hoyte was born in England in 1835. He arrived in New Zealand in 1861, where he was appointed art master at the Auckland college and Grammar School and became a foundation member of the New Zealand Society of Artists. After some time in Dunedin he emigrated to Australia in 1879, and the next year became the first president of the Art Society of New South Wales. Hoyte is best known for his watercolour paintings of Sydney Harbour and of New Zealand scenes.
