Born in London in 1868, Paul Montford was a sculptor and modelling master at the London Polytechnic. In 1923 he came to Australia to carve the four buttress groups in granite for the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance. Montford sculpted the bronze seated state of Adam Lindsay Gordon for Spring Street Gardens in 1932. He greatly influenced the direction of Australian sculpture.
