Born in England, and after serving in the Royal Navy George Gregory arrived in Melbourne in 1852 seeking to make his fortune on the Victorian goldfields. He was unsuccessful and turned to painting marine scenes including ships, port scenes, naval vesels and historical battles. He set up a business in Melbourne that produced photographic prints of his watercolours. His second son Arthur Victor Gregory, also an artist, assisted him in his busines and took it over after he died.

The total number of works by George Gregory offered for sale by auction since 1967 is 288, of which 189 (66%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $19,550 for 'Her Majesty's Colonial Battleship, HMCS Protector at Anchor, with Sailors Attending the Rigging' sold by Elder Fine Art in May 2014. This year 2 works have been offered for sale. Works by George Gregory are held by the Museum Of New Zealand, Art Gallery of South Australia and Queensland Art Gallery.
