John King arrived in New Zealand in 1855, and was exhibiting with the Otago Art Society in the late 1880s. His work was included in the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition, Dunedin in 1889-90. Watercolour landscapes are held in the Turnbull Library, and his work is also represented in the Hocken Library.
The earliest auction listing we have for John King is in 1983 and in total 15 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 9 (60%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $1,496 for Dunedin Harbour sold by Webb's in August 1993.
