Ernest Buckmaster was born in Auburn, Victoria and studied at the National Gallery of Victoria School from 1918 until 1924 under Bernard Hall and W. B. McInnes. He exhibited with the Victorian Artist's Society from 1919 to 1943 and in Sydney in 1927 and won the Archibald Prize in 1932. Buckmaster also exhibited with the Twenty Melbourne Painters from 1933 to 1962 and the Australian Academy of Art from 1938 to 1946, of which he was a foundation member. He was appointed an official war artist in 1945 and travelled to Singapore for the surrender of the Japanese, of which he painted 25 pictures for the Australian War Memorial. He won the Albury (Regional Art Centre) prize in 1950 and 1963. In 1959 he suffered a hear attack, and it wasn't until 1964 that he resumed holding annual exhibitions.
