Born in South Australia in 1861, landscape painter Ernest Christmas studied in Adelaide, Sydney and in London. He painted widely in England, exhibiting with the Royal Academy. He moved to New Zealand, settling first in Wellington, then in Auckland, exhibiting his landscapes with the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts from 1905. From 1911 onward he was travelling and painting throughoput North and South America, and died on in Honolulu in 1918 on his way back to Australia.
