Sara Hughes was born in Vancouver, Canada in 1971 where her New Zealand parents were students. Her parents returned to New Zealand where she was schooled. She studied at the Elam School of Art at the University of Auckland from which she graduated in 2001 with a Masters of Fine Arts. In 2005 she was the winner of the prestigious Wallace Arts Award as well as the Norsewear Art Award. A painter and installation artist, she works with patterned components of dots, squares and paisley and has exhibited in public galleries throughout New Zealand. She has been selected to participate in a number of notable residencies including the Francis Hodgkins Fellowship in 2003, the International Studio and Curatorial Program in New York in 2007 and the Creative New Zealand Berlin Visual Artists Residency at the Knstlerhaus Bethanien in 2008/09. In 2019 she was commissioned to make her largest ever public artwork made of glass for the under-construction New Zealand International Convention Centre in Auckland, which is expected to take 3 years to complete.
