Born in 1940 in Sheffield England, Booth studied at Sheffield College of Art before migrating to Australia with his family. He attended the National Gallery School from 1962 to 1965 and then taught at Prahran Technical College and the National Gallery of Victoria Art School where he later worked. His first solo exhibiton was in 1967 in Melbourne and his first group exhibition was at the National Gallery of Victoria, and the Art Gallery of New South Wales in the following year. In 1964 he was the joint winner of Bernard Hall Prize for Figure Painting at the National Gallery School, Melbourne.
