Born in Germany in 1914, Haefliger studied widely in Australia, Europe and Asia. As art critic for 'Art in Australia' and the 'Sydney Morning Herald' he helped mould the standards of Australian art in the 1940s and 1950s. He left Australia in 1957 with his wife - the artist Jean Bellette - to live in Spain, and returned to Australia in 1976.
