Marti Friedlander immigrated to New Zealand from the United Kingdom in 1958. In her long career as a photographer, Marti Friedlander's subjects have been included portraiture, rural, urban and suburban scenes and encounters Although based in New Zealand, she has lived or worked in Israel, Fiji, Tokelau and England. She has worked on many books, and by this means her photographs of elderly Maori women with moko, artists and writers, vineyards and vintners, and children have become particularly well-known. Her work has been exhibited at the Photographers' Gallery in London, the Waikato Art Museum, and in a large and celebrated retrospective at the Auckland Art Gallery in 2001, which then toured the country.
