Born in England in 1815, Hamar Arden was son of the watercolourist, Francis Arden (1777 - 1855). He arrived in New Zealand in 1853 and he lived mainly in Taranaki. He was a wine merchant in London until c.1850 then moved to Brighton and in 1853 emigrated to New Plymouth, New Zealand. He served in the Taranaki Volunteers and obtained a land grant at Tikorangi. He is best known for his watercolour landscapes of New Plymouth.
