George Dixon was born in Durham, England, about 1800 and emigrated to Van Diemen's Land in 1821 with his brother Robert. aboard the Westmoreland. He worked as overseer on the property of the chief magistrate of Hobart Town. After two years, the brothers received land grants from Governor Macquarie, and settled at Green Valley on the Lower Clyde on the south coast of new South Wales. His brother later sold his interest in the property to George and joined the New South Wales Surveyor-General's Department in 1826. An amateur watercolourist, his work mainly depicts the topography and water views of New South Wales.
