Born in Western Australia in 1909, Plate studied in Sydney and London. He travelled extensively throughout America, northern Europe and Russia, returning to Australia in 1940 and establishing the Notanda Gallery in Sydney. Plate has been described as Australia's Braque, because of his ability to extract the utmost from colours by bringing them to an almost monochromatic state.
We have records of art auction sales by Carl Plate from 1971 and in total 181 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 129 (71%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $24,400 for Graph Segments No.1 sold by Deutscher and Hackett in April 2017. This year one work has been offered for sale.
