John Tiplady was born in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, England in 1938. An impressionist painter he is a mostly self-taught artist, working in oil, watercolour, gouache and pastel. He was a finalist in the Wynne prize in 1969. He is a fellow and a past vice president of the Royal South Australian Society of Artists, and has exhibited widely.
