John Leonard worked in the South Australian Colonial Architect's Office as a young man and later became a cartoonist for various Adelaide newspapers and magazines. He later moved to Sydney and then to Melbourne and in the latter city worked on the locally published Life in the late 1880s and the Melbourne Punch Almanac in the early 1990s. He often signed his work "Leo".
