Born in Scotland in 1862, James White arrived in Australia in 1888. A sculptor, he made anatomy models for London hospitals, and in Sydney assisted Simonetti with the Governor Philip monument. He was recognised as the leading bronze caster in Australia, and was commissioned for many public works including the Queen Victoria Memorial. James White won the first Wynne Prize awarded for sculpture.
