Born in Castlemaine, Victoria in 1880, Martin Lewis studied with Julian Ashton at the Art Society's School in Sydney. Ashton, a famous painter, was also one of the first Australian artists to take up printmaking. In 1900 he moved to America where he became famous for his bold etchings - principally of city scenes and architectural designs. Lewis visited Japan to gain inspiration for his prints. He also taught his friend, the American realist artist, Edward Hopper, to etch. A touring restrospecive of his work was curated by the Castlemaine Art Gallery in 2002. He died in America in 1962.
