About James Walter Robert Linton
Born in London in 1869, James Linton studied extensively in England prior to his arrival in Australia in 1896. Best known as a painter and craftworker he originally came to Australia to look after the family's goldmining interest in Kalgoorlie. However, due to ill health he retired to Perth soon after his arrival. In 1899 he established the Linton Art School in Hay Street, Perth and later became an art instructor at the Perth Technical School, a position he retained until his retirement in 1931. He was Vice President of the West Australian Art Society, and also a trustee of the Public Museum and Art Gallery of Western Australia.
We have records of art auction sales by James Linton from 1985 and in total 106 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 89 (84%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $14,375 for South Perth Mill 1898 sold by McKenzies Auctioneers in December 2006. This year 3 works have been offered for sale.
