Michael Taylor was born in Sydney NSW in 1933. After schooling, he studied for a Diploma of Art (Painting) at East Sydney Technical College from 1949 - 53. In 1960 he was awarded the New South Wales Travelling Art Scholarship which enabled him to travel on study tours to Asia, Europe, the United States and India in the 1960s and early 1970s.. He taught art in Canberra in 1971 - 72 and was the the Creative Arts Fellow at the Australian National University in 1979. An abstract expressionist, his first one man show was in Sydney in 1963. Since then, he has exhibited in Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, and Newcastle and overseas in New Zealand, Japan, India, Indonesia and Los Angeles. He was the subject of a major, 50-year retrospective exhibition at the Canberra Museum and Gallery in 2016.
