John Paterson was born in Dundee, Scotland in 1851. He studied at the Royal Scottish Academy Schools where he exhibited his first painting. He migrated to Melbourne with his family in 1872, where he met Buvelot. They painted together until Paterson returned to Edinburgh in 1875. where he undertook further studies, and exhibited in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool and Manchester. John Paterson returned to Melbourne in 1884, where he coninued working and exhibiting. He later became a trustee of the Melbourne National Gallery and president of the Victorian Artists' Society in 1901-2.
