A bird and wildlife painter, William T. Cooper was born in Newcastle, NSW in 1934 and began his career in 1964 initially as a landscape and seascape artist, but then became an avian artist.He travelled all around Australia and throughout Asia and East Africa in pursuit of his subjects - mainly birds. He provided the illustrations for a a number of limited edition bird books including Portfolio of Australian Birds, written by Keith Hindwood. This was followed by Parrots of the World, Birds of Paradise and Bowerbirds, Australian Parrots, Kingfishers and Related Birds, The Cockatoos (a Portfolio of all Species), writtem by Joseph M Forshaw. In 1994 Cooper was awarded the Order of Australia (AO) for his contribution to art and natural history.

The total number of works by William Cooper offered for sale by auction since 1977 is 51, of which 38 (75%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $60,000 for Cockatoos and Other Birds sold by Bonhams in June 2010. This year 5 works have been offered for sale.
