Born in Perth in 1952, Mal Leckie majored in sculpture at the Western Australia Institute of Technology (WAIT) from 1970-73. He taught art at The Southport School, Queensland before becoming a full-time artist in 1988. He has exhibited, mostly paintings and drawings, in all Australian States and Hong Kong, the first of 34 solo shows being in 1980. He is a three-time winner of the Gold Coast City Art Prize. Leckie's work is represented in regional collections in Queensland and NSW.
