Born in Wellington, New Zealand in 1888, Esmond Atkinson was the grandson and nephew of painters J C and D K Richmond. A botanist and self taught artist, Atkinson worked in the Department of Agriculture before his appointment in 1928 as official artist for the Dominion Museum, Wellington. He exhibited with the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts and his work is represented in the National Art Gallery.
