Stanley Davis was born in Gloucester, England, and studied art in London and Paris. After World War I, and in his his mid-twenties, he emigrated to New Zealand, and from 1922 worked for the New Zealand Railways Advertising Branch. As well as designing posters and other advertising material he specialised in portraiture. One of his best known works is the oil-painting of the official group and some of the public at the opening of the electrified Lyttelton—Christchurch railway in 1929. He died in mid-career on 10 January 1938 while on holidays in Tauranga.
