A New Zealand artist, Don Peebles was born in 1922 at Taneatua. Following service during World War II he studied at the Royal College of Art in Florence, and on his return to New Zealand, at Wellington Technical College from 1947 to 1950 and in Sydney from 1951 to 1953 where he came under the influence of John Passmore. A pioneer of abstract art in New Zealand, Peebles exhibited in solo and group shows between 1969 and 2010. He was a lecturer at the University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts from 1964 to 1982.
