Born in Gawler, South Australia in 1891, after retail employment, was able to move to Sydney about 1927 and study at the East Sydney Technical College and under Fred Britton in Adelaide. An impressionist and modern painter he painted still lifes, portraits and landscapes. He won the Melrose Prize for portraiture in 1929 and 1932,and also won prizes for landscapes and seascapes, many of which was painted around Victor Harbor in South Australia. He was president of the Royal South Australian Society of Artists from 1940 until his death in 1950.
