Born in England, Walter Burton arrived in New Zealand in 1866. He was joined by his brother Alfred in 1868 and they conducted a successful photographic business until 1877. Walter died in 1880 but Alfred continued to travel throughout New Zealand as a photographer. (Also see the entry for Burton Bros.)
