William Rubery Bennett, landscape painter, was born Brisbane in 1893. He studied at the Royal Queensland Art Society School in Brisbane and in Sydney under John Salvana, Lawson Balfour and Fred Britten. He moved to Sydney, where he conducted the Rubery Bennett Art Gallery in the 1930s and 1940s, dealing mostly in Australian impressionistic painters. He was one of the first to exhibit the work of Tom Garrett (1929) and later himself became a popular painter of late impressionistic landscapes, his aim being to capture the pervading light of summer landscapes, his preferred subject matter.

William Bennett is one of the most prolific of the artists listed in our database, with the number of works offered for sale by auction since 1969 of 1,266, of which 926 (73%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $93,500 for Kangaroo Valley from the Slope of Mount Cambewarra sold by Sotheby's in April 1987. This year 3 works have been offered for sale. Works by William Bennett are held by the Queensland Art Gallery, Art Gallery of NSW and a further three major public national galleries (see list below).
