Born in Cooma, New South Wales in 1923, John Balmain served in the armed forces during World War II. After the war he studied for a science degree at university but withdrew in 1947 to study art under Max Meldrum, over time establishing himself as a professional artist and teacher.

We have records of art auction sales by John Balmain from 1979 and in total 37 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 19 (51%) were sold.
