Born in England in 1824, Alfred Sells was an Anglican clergyman who sailed for Australia in 1877 and was initially based at the Holy Trinity Church in Lyndoch in the Barossa Valley South Australia. He was in Australia for 11 years between 1877 and 1888. During his stay he travelled widely, making watercolour sketches around South Australia as he travelled. He also visited Victoria and Tasmania. He died in England in 1908. He is often wrongly catalogued as Arthur Sells. An album of his topographical drawings and sketches of South Australia sold for £48,000 at Bonhams, London in September 2010.
