Born in Melbourne in 1916, Irene Hill studied at the National Gallery of Australia in Melbourne with William Beckwith McInnes and Charles Wheeler and became a full time professional portrait painter. For a number of years she was involved at the Eye and Ear Hospital in East Melbourne, painting irises for the surgery department before the advent of modern medical photography. She had a number of paintings accepted for entry in the Archibald Prize and received several highly commendable citations. Her portrait commissions started at $5000. During this time she lived with a fellow artist Leon Hume, but she never married.
